The European Union has launched the DTC-1 pilot project to test the Digital Travel Credential (DTC) on KLM flights between Canada and the Netherlands. The DTC is a virtual identifier attached to a passport and stored on the holder’s smartphone, representing the electronic travel document exactly. IDEMIA, a global leader in identity technologies, has been selected as the technology provider for this pilot project.

How does the DTC work?

The DTC allows travelers to create their virtual identifier on a dedicated mobile application. To do this, they must take a selfie that will be compared to the photo stored in the chip of their travel document. Once created, travelers can communicate their data and entry questionnaire to the airline for biometric boarding and border control authorities for biometric border crossings. Only a biometric match and a passport tap will be required upon arrival.
