Alcatraz Rock X
Contactless facial biometric reader for access control
Description
Verify identity at the entrance, keep people moving and detect unauthenticated access: Alcatraz Rock X brings these functions together in a compact facial biometric reader. It integrates with existing access control systems and can be installed at a door, gate or turnstile, indoors or outdoors.
It combines facial authentication, 3D liveness detection and real-time tailgating detection. Authorised users enter the area according to the configured rules, while the system flags additional passages that require the security team’s attention.
Alcatraz Rock X product overview
Authenticate the person
A person’s face becomes a means of contactless authentication.
3D liveness detection strengthens protection against spoofing attempts using a photograph or video.
Detect tailgating
The reader monitors passages and detects when someone follows an authorised user through the entrance without authenticating.
An alert enables the security team to respond.
Keep your existing system
OSDP and Wiegand interfaces allow biometrics to be added to existing access control systems, with face-only or face-and-card authentication to suit the project.
From enrolment to access
- Enrol the user: the user completes the site’s enrolment process, either on a smartphone or at the reader.
- Check liveness: the sensors analyse the presence of a real face and its 3D characteristics.
- Authenticate: the reader compares the face with the biometric profile and sends the corresponding identifier to the access control system.
- Apply access rights: the access control system grants or denies entry according to the configured rules.
- Monitor the passage: tailgating detection flags an additional person entering without authentication.
Centralised management
The Alcatraz administration platform manages readers, users, events and updates. The architecture and deployment model should be defined to suit the project’s environment.
The Rock X in action
Three official videos introduce the reader and demonstrate its main applications.
Official Alcatraz video – Rock X overview – 1 min 10.
Simple everyday access
The Rock X matches the face presented against stored profiles locally on the device. Its light indicator and visual cues guide the user at the entrance.
One reader, multiple security levels: a face can act as the sole credential or be combined with a card in a multi-factor process. Access permissions remain governed by the access control configuration.
Designed for business entrances, the enclosure is rated IP66 and IK08, with a stated operating temperature range of −40 °C to +66 °C.
Tailgating detection
Official Alcatraz video – Tailgating detection – 58 seconds.
A door opens for an authorised employee. A second person follows them through without presenting a card or authenticating: this is known as tailgating.
The Rock X detects this additional passage and generates an alert.
The monitoring team can then assess the event and arrange a response in line with the site’s procedures.
Detection raises an alert; physically preventing entry depends on the connected equipment, such as a gate or security vestibule. The reader alone does not form a physical barrier to entry.
Smartphone enrolment
Official Alcatraz video – Smartphone enrolment – 19 seconds.
Enrolment creates the biometric profile used for subsequent access. With Alcatraz mobile enrolment, the user receives an invitation and follows a guided facial capture process on their smartphone.
Once the profile has been registered and access rights assigned, the user can authenticate at the Rock X. This makes it easier to prepare access in advance, particularly when users are spread across several sites.
The solution also supports enrolment directly at the reader. The choice of process depends on the organisation, configuration and user management policies.
Alcatraz, a facial authentication specialist

Alcatraz develops biometric solutions to secure physical access to buildings. Its approach combines contactless facial authentication, tailgating detection and centralised administration, with integration into existing access control systems.
Its solutions meet the needs of offices, data centres, healthcare facilities and industrial sites. The Rock X is installed at the entrance to verify users’ identities and monitor passages.
Frequently asked questions about the Rock X
Can the Rock X work with existing access cards?
Yes. Its Wiegand and OSDP interfaces allow it to integrate with an existing installation and, depending on the configuration, combine facial authentication with card presentation. Compatibility and wiring must be checked for the system concerned.
Does tailgating detection physically prevent someone from entering?
The Rock X detects an additional passage without authentication and generates an alert. Physically preventing entry depends on the connected devices, such as a security vestibule or gate, and their control logic.
Can the Rock X be installed outdoors?
Yes. The manufacturer specifies IP66 protection against dust and water jets, IK08 impact resistance and an operating temperature range of −40 °C to +66 °C. The location and installation conditions must comply with the manufacturer’s installation guidelines.
Does mobile enrolment replace authentication at the reader?
No. Mobile enrolment creates the biometric profile using a smartphone. To gain access, the user then presents their face to the Rock X, which compares it with the stored profile.
How can I assess integration for my project?
Send Biotime details of your access control system, the number of entrances, pedestrian traffic and operating conditions. This information will help determine the architecture and configurations best suited to your requirements.
