Why has OSDP become the international communications standard for access control?

The Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP) has become the international communication standard for access control systems. Developed by the Security Industry Association (SIA), OSDP aims to facilitate secure communication between various access control systems. What is OSDP?

The Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP) is a communication standard for access control designed to improve interoperability between access control and security products. Created in 2008 and adopted as an international standard by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in 2020, OSDP advantageously replaces older protocols thanks to its ability to evolve and adapt to emerging security threats.

Key features of OSDP

OSDP is distinguished by several key features that enhance the security and functionality of access control systems. Firstly, the use of advanced encryption and authentication methods strengthens the systems’ security. Moreover, the bidirectional communication allowed by OSDP enables a more robust data exchange between readers and control panels. The use of biometrics for contactless access is being advanced by Telefónica and IDEMIA

IDEMIA’s biometric reader Morphowave, which provides fully touchless access control technology, has been presented by Telefónica in their demonstration and innovation center.

Morphowave captures and verifies 4 fingerprints in less than a second with a simple contactless handwave. And, more than 10,000 units are currently in operation worldwide.

Telefónica is focusing on biometric access control devices for their latest innovation catalog. The company presents their advanced technology to clients in the Distrito Telefónica’s Demonstration and Innovation Center.

In the coming months, Telefónica Tech’s Ingeniería de Seguridad (TIS) division will fully embrace this technology as an integral USP in their future hi-tech security systems projects, focusing on offering customers revolutionary solutions to bring added benefit to all their hi-tech security projects.

The French leader IDEMIA and the biometrics market

IDEMIA, a company created from the merger of Oberthur Technologies and Morpho, has become the market leader in biometrics security. This French company is not about to stop.

Since the sanitary crisis emerged in early 2020, the notion of hygiene has become an additional reason to ensure the safety and security of individuals. IDEMIA realized that Contactless technology was in demand.

In 2014, IDEMIA launched an amazing contactless solution: the MorphoWave Compact. This biometric reader is designed to read four fingerprints on the fly in less than a second. It was chosen by IDEMIA to secure access to its headquarters in Paris-La Défense. Indeed, this contactless system is fast, precise and hygienic.

Facial recognition, another contactless technology has had an increasing demand in the last few months, which is a real opportunity in the security market. And, IDEMIA is not to be outdone, since it has just released solution for that: the VisionPass. This robust and reliable contactless biometric reader is able to provide near –motion 1 second verification, through multiple angles and in all light conditions.

Visionpass has associated Artifical Intelligence and facial recognition algorithms with a state of the art optical solution combining 2D and 3D cameras. Visionpass resists all kinds of stacks and spoofing attempts, answer the needs of the most demanding customers and institutions.

To have presence in strategic places is the strength of the group, such as the Lyon-Saint Exupéry airport. Passengers can use their facial photos, their ID documents and the barcode on the boarding cards, to generate a biometric template, which will allow them to be identified at the boarding gates. And, the user experience is clearly improved.

Working with major security actors such as the FBI and Interpol, through the Augmented Vision based on facial recognition is another important strength of IDEMIA, which could be used to find a targeted individual in a crowd of people after an attack, for example.

Eventually, IDEMIA would work on the storage of biometric data in smartphone, which could allow people to access the stadiums for the 2024 Olympic Games.

Deployment of IDEMIA’s contactless biometric solution in Sydney’s highest building

Cominfo, a European manufacturer of entrance control gates and other access corridors, has integrated IDEMIA’s Morphowave Compact biometric reader into its EasyGate SPT model, in order to offer secure and contactless access to more than 2,000 people who enter Sydney’s highest building every day.

The EasyGate SPT model uses innovative MDD motor technology and infra-red optical sensors to avoid tailgating and access of unauthorized people.

Morphowave Compact is able to scan fingerprints and identify users with one hand gesture. It is a recommended solution in high traffic areas since it can identify 50 people every minute.

The project was developed by Centaman, an Australian access control provider and partner of Cominfo. And, this touchless biometric device was integrated into the EasyGate SPT speedgate by Centaman in May 2019.

The global access control market is expected to reach $12.8 billion by 2025, with an annual increase rate of 8.2 %, up from $8.6 billion in 2020, thanks to the growing awareness of security systems, technological innovation and wireless security.

And, the global market of contactless biometric technology is expected to reach $18.6 billion by 2026, with an annual increase rate of 19.1 %.
