Border control is at the heart of global security challenges. With evolving migration flows and new regulatory requirements, authorities are seeking to combine security, efficiency and privacy protection. In this context, biometrics has emerged as an essential technological response. The European EINSTEIN project, in which IDEMIA is involved, illustrates this transformation.
Smarter borders to address new challenges
Traditional control systems are reaching their limits in the face of increasing international travel and more sophisticated fraud attempts. To meet these challenges, the European Union is progressively rolling out solutions such as the Entry/Exit System (EES) and ETIAS, based on biometric recognition and automated data analysis.
These technologies make it possible to reliably authenticate each traveller, speed up border crossings and strengthen traceability while ensuring compliance with the GDPR. The goal is clear: secure borders without slowing down the movement of people.
EINSTEIN, a European project for integrated and secure border control
The EINSTEIN project brings together 21 partners from 11 European countries, under the coordination of the Greek research centre CERTH. Its ambition is to develop a suite of interconnected applications covering the entire traveller journey: digital document issuance, pre-registration, mobile control, biometric kiosks and automated e-gates.
This modular and interoperable approach aims to simplify the work of authorities while ensuring a high level of security. Each solution is designed to integrate easily with existing systems and comply with current regulations.
IDEMIA’s role in modernising border control
As a key partner in the project, IDEMIA brings its expertise in facial recognition, fraud detection and document verification. The company is developing next-generation kiosks capable of authenticating a traveller in just a few seconds while detecting identity fraud attempts or falsified documents.
These innovations reflect a major shift: the transition from manual checks to digital and biometric management, which is faster, more reliable and more respectful of personal data.
For companies and institutions looking to strengthen the security of their access points, these projects pave the way for technologies already available in the world of biometric access control — a field in which Biotime Biometrics has been supporting its partners for more than 15 years.
